10 Tricks to Help Your Kids Fall in Love with Writing

kids writing

Whether you’re a parent or just someone who works with children, it’s hard to keep up with the myriad of subjects that kids are expected to learn these days. From arithmetic to art, from grammar to geography, there seems to be no end of knowledge that children need to gain in order to succeed in school and beyond. But don’t let your child get lost in the shuffle! Here are ten tricks you can use to help your kids fall in love with writing today.

1- Get a special notebook

A special notebook is a great way of setting up your child for success. It’s easy to get caught up in just using a regular notebook or scrap piece of paper argument, but there are many benefits that come from having your own notebook. The simplest is that it will make them feel like they are more serious about their writing, as they now have their very own place they can write down their thoughts and ideas. When you give them a notebook, be sure to talk about how it is theirs and only theirs.  When they know that this is their space where no one else has access to what they are writing, they will be less likely to lose interest because they won’t want other people reading something so personal and private.

2- Set up a writing corner

Creating a writing space for your kids will make them want to write more. This could be as simple as setting up a desk and chair near an open window so they can look outside or it could be an entire room dedicated to their creative endeavors.

You can also set up stations for different types of writing, such as word search puzzles or word jumbles.

3- Take field trips

Field trips are a great way for your kids to see firsthand how the thing they are writing about exists in the world. For example, if you take your children on a field trip to an apple orchard and show them all of the different types of apples and ask them questions, they will start thinking about what it means that there is more than one type of apple. Then, they might want to write about all of the different kinds of apples that exist.

4- Dictate stories

  1. Start anywhere. It doesn’t matter where you start because the story will grow.
  2. Give your characters obstacles they need to overcome and goals they need to achieve. This will make them feel like real people and will make it easier for readers to relate to them.

5- Do freewriting

Freewriting is a great way for students of all ages to find inspiration and get their creative juices flowing. It’s also an invaluable tool for helping students learn how to write. Freewriting forces them to think about what they want to say and allows them the time they need to get it all down on paper or on a computer screen. This technique can be used at any stage in the writing process, whether you’re brainstorming ideas, drafting your work, or editing what you’ve written.

6- Keep a journal

Keep a journal. Journaling can be a form of therapy, and it’s a great way for kids to work through their thoughts and feelings. It can also help them develop writing skills. Just by writing about what they did that day, kids will learn how to better express themselves through words. And when they’re able to see their thoughts on paper, it makes them feel like someone is listening or that someone cares about what they have to say.

7- Write letters

Dear Future Kid,

8- Make lists

  1. Read, read, read!
  2. Write by hand
  3. Keep a journal
  4. Take notes from what you’re reading and see if you can use that information in your own writing
  5. Find the good parts about writing and tell yourself about them as often as possible!

9- Create a Word Wall

The best way to get kids interested in writing is by making it fun. The following are ten tricks that you can use to help your children fall in love with writing:

1) Make a Word Wall and fill it up with words that interest them. Let the children take turns adding new words when they come across them, or let them add a word when they write an original story or poem.

10- Read, read, read!

Pick up a children’s book and read it aloud to them. This is a great way for kids who don’t know how to read yet to learn how the words sound, and it will help them get excited about reading. Older kids can practice their reading skills by reading books out loud too. It’s also important for kids of all ages to read a variety of different books in order to experience new things and learn about new topics.
